New System Checklist
Get three estimates from licensed contractors.
Get the estimates in writing.
Make sure the estimate includes all costs:
Materials including line drier
Labor
Crane charges (if applicable)
Refrigerant recovery and disposal
Old equipment disposal
Stand or pad (if applicable)
Elbow (if applicable)
Warranty
Sales Tax
Estimates for a new system should be
free of charge.

Some things to keep in mind:
If you are getting estimates for a new system
that is 13 SEER or higher, make sure you ask
if your current air handling system (the
equipment located in the attic/closet) will be
compatible with the new system. Many of the
new 13+ SEER systems will require a variable
speed air handler, or if you are switching from
an R-22 system to a R-410A system, your
existing equipment will not be compatible.
Sometimes, your existing air handler will be
compatible with the installation of a TXV
valve. Packaged units will not require an air
handler.
Ask about the warranty of the new equipment
and make sure that you get all the warranty
documentation at installation.
If you accept a bid, make sure you have in
writing that the contractor will not perform
services that are not a part of that bid without
your consent. Some examples of these extra
charges would be if the unit did not arrive with
the necessary charge of refrigerant or if there
are extended crane charges.
Make sure the contractor you choose is
bonded and insured. Don't be afraid to ask
for a copy of the company's liability insurance
certificate before scheduling the installation.
(The installer will not have this information on
his truck)
